Dear Colleagues,

The 10th annual Thermal and Fluids Engineering Conference (TFEC) meeting at George Washington University, Washington, DC, USA on March, 9-12, 2025 will host a competitive event involving CFD simulations of unsteady room ventilation. The aim is to expose the difficulty in benchmarking CFD results due to the influence and confluence of various computational uncertainties. Our procedure will be as outlined below and will mimic a similar competition in 2024.

First Annual ASTFE Green Energy CFD Competition
  1. Interested teams will need to notify the event lead Wayne Strasser via wstrasser of their intent to participate by August 1st.
    1. Each team can be composed of a variety of members, but it must be student-led.
    2. There will be two competition categories: Undergraduate-led and Graduate-led.
  2. An unsteady heating experiment in a simplified room geometry will be carried out at Texas A&M University, and those results will be kept undisclosed until the conference.
  3. The geometry and boundary conditions for said experiment will be shared via LinkedIn, the TFEC website, and email sometime in August.
  4. Team leaders will submit blank abstract placeholders titled “ASTFE Green Energy CFD Competition” to this website by September 6th.
  5. Teams will conduct CFD simulation(s) using their own preferred methods.
  6. Within 2 weeks of the conference, all teams will submit designated results in a TBD specified format, along with precise data from tracking CPU/GPU usage, to Wayne.
  7. “Winners” will be determined by assessing the extent to which their results match the experimental data for the least computational energy consumption.
  8. There will be three prizes, each, for the Graduate-led and Undergraduate-led teams: 1st $1500, 2nd $1000, and 3rd $500 for a total of $6000.
  9. All results will be displayed during a dedicated session at the conference at which time the team leaders will give a brief presentation before the reveal.

Thank you for your consideration,

Wayne Strasser, PE, PhD
